Business is booming in Brazosport as a result of the incredible financial investments our industry partners are making in the community.

This is great news in terms of bringing new people to the community and expanding the tax base. It also gives individuals who already have the technical skills to do the jobs associated with the industrial growth options and opportunities for growing their careers.

What about those who don’t have the technical skills to do these jobs? What about industry’s need for 20,000-plus people to build these new projects?

Brazosport College is charged with not only providing exceptional academic instruction, but also responding to the industrial needs of our community. We do that via traditional credit instruction that can lead to certificates or degrees.

Through the Center for Business/Industry Training (CBIT), BC works closely with its industry partners to develop and deliver customized training specific to a company’s needs. BC also develops innovative programs to address the shared demands of underserved populations and industry.

Brazosport College is charged with not only providing exceptional academic instruction, but also responding to the industrial needs of our community. The Center for Business/Industry Training, housed in the College’s Corporate Learning Center, exists to meet the training needs of the business and industry community.

Here are some program snapshots illustrating this work:

Credit instruction: BC students obtain degrees
and certifications through a variety of learning methods including traditional classroom courses, hands-on training and online courses. More than
75 degree and certificate options are offered at BC, ranging from chemical technology and construction management to instrument technology and pipefitting. More than 90 percent of Brazosport graduates are employed and/or enrolled after graduation, with some making as much as $100,000 a year.

Center for Business/Industry Training: CBIT exists to meet the training needs of the business and industry community. Partners, including BASF, Braskem, Dow Chemical, Olin and the SI Group, have worked to develop customized training for the companies’ new-hire operators.

Over 75 degree and certificate options are offered at BC, ranging from chemical technology and construction management to instrument technology and pipefitting.

Once hired by the company, new employees are sent to BC for the first eight to 15 weeks of employment. Going to school and mastering technical content is their job focus. Once new employees successfully complete classes and training at BC, they are released for in-plant training.

Many of these students also earn college credit while completing their new-hire training at BC.

Innovative Programs: BC initiated the Jumpstart program in 2014. This project, which is funded by a variety of grants from Brazoria County, the Texas Workforce Commission and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, has graduated more than 100 students and another 50 are currently enrolled.

In nine weeks, students complete three college courses specializing in pipefitting, millwright or industrial electricity. Successful completers earn a Marketable Skills Award from BC, their NCCER Core Card and Level 1 Certification, a National Career Readiness Certificate, and complete True to Life Ministry’s Employment 101 class.

The PET plant at Brazosport College features state-of-the-art equipment and allows the College to train students on equipment similar to what they see in local plants.

Due to generous grant funding, this instruction, as well as tools and work clothing, is provided at no cost to eligible students.

Jumpstart has helped transition welfare recipients into skilled craftsmen making between $16 and $28 an hour. Contractor companies who hire these graduates, including Fluor, Zachry, Infinity and ICS, relay that they are valued employees who are contributing to the effort to meet their incredible workforce needs.

Brazosport College’s responsibility is to provide area residents with exceptional academic instruction that equips students with the skills to secure family sustaining wages and achieve success.

It is also BC’s job to respond quickly and innovatively to the needs of industry.  Join us as we strive to achieve student success and provide lifelong learning by responding to student needs, creating a dynamic learning environment and enriching our communities. BC is your College of Choice!
