BC Jumpstart program graduates 23
Brazosport College recently graduated a new group of students from its community-training Jumpstart program, as 23 students completed the program with an emphasis on either pipefitting or electrical work. During the spring semester Jumpstart graduated seven pipefitters and 16 electricians, with all graduates earning interviews with local industries.
Jumpstart is a nine-week training that provides skills to participants who want to be hired as entry-level pipefitters, millwrights and electricians with local industry. Hosted by Brazosport College, the training program is tuition-free for students, with books, materials and tools provided. Students must pay for a background check and a hair follicle test, as well as meet other grant-determined requirements, before acceptance into the program. The program is currently funded by a U.S. Department of Labor grant, a Texas Workforce Commission grant, a Workforce Investment act and an Accelerate Texas grant.

BC LVN program named among state’s best
Brazosport College’s Licensed Vocational Nursing (LVN) program was recently ranked among the best LVN nursing schools in Texas by the nursing Website, PracticalNursing.org.
Brazosport College’s 100 percent pass rate in the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nursing (NCLEX-PN) was a major factor used to rank the College’s program fifth among nearly 100 LVN schools across the state. BC’s LVN program was one of only seven programs on the list with a perfect NCLEX-PN pass rate.
The NCLEX-PN exam is used by state boards of nursing around the country for testing proficiency and granting licensure. Brazosport College was one of only two LVN schools in the greater-Houston area to earn a top-five distinction, as well as one of three local schools to rank in the top 10. BC hosts Sweeny pipefitting students
Brazosport College recently assisted a group of Sweeny High School students in learning more about a potentially profitable career. The Sweeny High School class, which consisted of pipefitting students, made a field trip to the College’s pipefitting lab and worked with BC instructor Horace Buchanan on some of the skills needed for a pipefitting career.
During the four-hour session, students were engaged in a variety of experiences, including pipe threading, pipe bending, selection of proper materials, fittings and gaskets. Students were also expected to demonstrate proper safety precautions in removal of pipe from pipe-racks and into jack-stands, as well as extracting and replacing faulty pipe sections.
In addition to offering academic classes for students seeking transfer to universities, Brazosport College offers a wide range of workforce certificates and associate degree options, as well as dual-credit courses for high school students looking to get a jumpstart on their collegiate future.
