Jacob Kennedy has always loved cars. Whether it’s driving, building or repairing, he’s had a passion for automobiles since he was a young child. Now he’s using Brazosport College as a vehicle to turn his hobby into a career.

“I’ve always enjoyed working with cars, but I began thinking about it as a career opportunity around my freshman year in high school,” Jacob said. “I heard about Brazosport College and its automobile technology program, so I began taking classes at the college while I was still in high school.”

Jacob, a graduate of Columbia High School, is currently working toward his certification in automotive technology. He could also choose to pursue an associate degree in automotive technology in the future.

“This is a very good program here at Brazosport College,” the 19-year-old said. “The instructors are very knowledgeable and that’s really important. With a good teacher, I know I’ll be ready once my schooling is done.”

Just as important, Jacob realizes that a degree or certificate from Brazosport College gives him a leg up on some of the competition once he begins looking for a job in the automotive industry.

“It gives me a big advantage because I will enter the field with a certificate I can show employers,” he said. “That shows potential employers that I have the skills and knowledge to do the required job.”
